When considering the painting and maintenance of your commercial building roof, a cool roof should be something you visit.
And what exactly is a cool roof? When Avello Group is referring to a cool roof, we mean those that are made to reflect the suns heat and emit absorbed radiation back into the atmosphere.
Cool roofing is not an entirely new concept. Researchers have been studying materials that can reduce solar reflectance and thermal emittance for decades, if only so that energy consumption due to cooling buildings could be reduced. The first “cool roof” material was introduced in California in 2001.
They can be made up of highly reflective paint, sheet coverings or highly reflective tiles or shingles. These types of roofs literally stay cooler, thus reducing the amount of heat held and transferred to the building below, keeping the building a cooler and more constant temperature.
To put this concept more simply try putting your hand on a white piece of metal out in the sun or a black piece of metal and see which one holds less heat. Of course, we all know wearing black or dark material compared to white or very light colours results in our body temperature being heightened quicker.
Now that the concept is clear, what are the benefits? Well, according to the Victorian Government’s research paper, the benefits include:
- Make your building ‘greener’
- Reduced utility bills – less heat absorption means less need for cooling
- Lower use of air conditioning means lower maintenance costs
- Increasing occupant comfort
- Potentially being able to decrease the size of and prolong the life of your air conditioning system
- Reducing maintenance costs and extending roof life – avoiding reroofing costs and reducing solid waste
- Assist your building in meeting building codes – Section J
- Maintaining aesthetics with a roof that performs and looks good
The standouts for us are the flow on effects of reducing overall maintenance costs and on-going heating and cooling expenses for your business by having a cool roof.
